Comparing linen and lyocell
A marketplace shortlist can hold linen and lyocell at the same time. They are not interchangeable just because both can be cut into apparel.

What linen contributes
Linen is filed here as bast fibre. One reason to open it is natural texture that reads premium when well finished. One reason to sample is creasing is characteristic, not always a defect.
Linen pages should be read for construction and weight, not only for the fibre name.
What lyocell contributes
Lyocell is filed here as regenerated cellulose. One reason to open it is useful in modern cellulose programmes. One reason to sample is brand names are not a substitute for composition strings.
Lyocell belongs in the shortlist only when its published construction fits the garment.
How to choose without a winner
Keep linen when breathability in warm climates is the constraint you cannot drop.
Keep lyocell when soft fluid apparel hand matters more. Leave GSM blank if the fabric page does not publish it.
| Linen | Lyocell | |
|---|---|---|
| Family | bast fibre | regenerated cellulose |
| Often considered for | shirts, dresses, trousers | shirts, dresses, blouses |
| A strength to test | Strong story for resort and summer programmes | Blends well for summer clothing |
| A watchout | Sheer open weaves need opacity checks for dresses | Care and wet behaviour need sampling |
Questions
- Is linen always better than lyocell?
- No. The garment, construction and published weight decide. Reputation is not a spec.
